For the men out there who don't have a skincare routine or experience any kind of skin discomfort, condition or earlier signs of aging, this is for you! The reason your skin is experiencing those problems can stem from not having a skincare regimen. Everyone can benefit from having some kind of skincare routine - not necessarily for “beauty” but for skin health. A simple skincare routine can drastically prevent breakouts, dryness, effects of environmental damage, fine lines or excessive oil production. Here's how to support your skin health with skincare.
The Minimum Skincare Routine
If it's time to shave, go through these steps for the area of where you're shaving. Shaving your face exfoliates your skin so your skincare products will absorb even better!
- Shave with Shaving Gel | Aveeno Therapeutic Shave Gel
- After Shave Balm | Nivea Men Sensitive Post Shave Balm
- Sunscreen (Morning)
*The products listed above will help prevent razor bumps, burns, ingrown hairs and irritation. It is recommended to prep your skin with warm water whether it's with a warm, wet towel or shaving during or after your shower. This will help soften your bristly beard and open up your pores for a smoother shave.
As we go throughout our day, dirt, debris, pollutants & dead skin can build up on our face. Cleansing is an important step to removing impurities and helps prevent your pores from getting clogged & enlarged. Men are more likely to have bigger pores in the first place because of higher testosterone levels. Don’t skip this step!
It is recommended to cleanse every night. Washing your face with water can be enough for the morning, as it helps to not strip away all your natural facial oil. However, oily skin types will prefer cleansing morning & night.
*For acne: Apply the Avarelle Acne Patch to your blemish after cleansing.
Serums contain active ingredients. Active ingredients are formulated to address specific skin concerns. Antioxidants or retinol are great active ingredients and highly recommended by dermatologists. An antioxidant like Vitamin C helps with skin texture, calming redness, firming, evening out skin tone, and lightening dark spots. Retinol is the OG and highly proven ingredient to fight fine lines and wrinkles.
Naturium Vitamin C Super Serum Plus (contains Vitamin C & Retinol)
This is a key step to lock-in moisture and all that goodness you applied to your skin. Without moisturizer, a lot of the hydration in your skin will be sucked out into the air around you. This causes that tight, dry feeling which can catapult into the overproduction of oil because your skin tries to overcompensate.
Fenty Skin Hydra Vizor Invisible Moisturizer (with Reef-safe Sunscreen SPF 30)
Cerave PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion (the PM just means it does not contain sunscreen, you can use it in the morning.)
Sunscreen (Only for Morning)
Don’t forget your sunscreen! Skin cancer is in the Top 5 most common cancers in the United States and is also the most preventable. According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control & Prevention) the sun’s ultraviolet rays can damage your skin in just 15 minutes. Prolonged exposure from UV rays also promotes wrinkles, age spots, inflammation, and scaly patches. Sunscreen is proven to significantly decrease these risks of skin cancers, skin precancers, and photoaging. Read more on sunscreen here:
It is only for the morning + reapplication throughout the day because sunscreen contains bigger molecules where if you sleep in it, it can enlarge your pores throughout the night.
- Consistency is Key.
- Don’t be hesitant to go for skincare products that market towards women. Men can use any skincare product as long as it works for their skin type!
