How do pimple patches with tea tree oil work?

Your guide to tea tree oil – from its benefits to related products like tea tree pimple patches!

Whether you’re an avid user of pimple patches or not, you’ve probably seen “tea tree oil” included in the ingredients list. Countless advertisements for skincare products are also embellished with the term “tea tree oil.” So what is it?

Background on tea tree oil

Tea tree oil is an essential oil that originates from the leaves of a small tree called Melaleuca alternifolia, which is native to Australia. Before it became widely popularized for its skin and hair benefits, tea tree oil has been used as a traditional medicine. The extracted oil contains numerous properties, like terpinen-4-ol, that are shown to eliminate certain viruses, bacteria, and other foreign invaders. It has been used for a variety of purposes, including as a natural deodorant, an all-purpose cleaner, and a fresh produce preservant. Because of its antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant elements, tea tree oil has most conventionally become a valuable remedy for skin conditions.

What are its effects on the skin?

With several studies supporting the skin benefits of tea tree oil, it’s no wonder that it has expanded into basic skincare regimens.

The anti-inflammatory properties of tea tree oil help to:

  •  Soothe irritated skin
  • Reduce redness
  • Decrease swelling

It has also been found to have a moisturizing element, targeting dry skin and itchiness. In a 2016 study on the effects of the combination of tea tree oil and resveratrol for oily skin, researchers found that, by the end of study, most participants had less bacteria and smaller pores on their face. Although tea tree oil is not a cure-all for acne by itself, it has been shown to aid the prevention and reduction of acne scars, improving the overall appearance of the skin.

How do you use tea tree oil for your face?

The skincare market now offers countless products that incorporate tea tree oil in various forms like pure essential oils, moisturizers, serums, facial cleansers, and more. Due to its perks, it is most commonly applied topically as a diluted essential oil.

To apply the oil:

  1. The face should first be prepared by gently cleansing and patting it dry
  2. Soak a cotton pad with diluted tea tree oil
  3. Gently dab the pad onto the blemishes
  4. Once the oil is set into the skin, that’s it!

Remember, too much of anything is not a good idea.  While tea tree oil is a great skincare product, you should understand the ingredient properly before adding too much or too little.
